Product Overview & Details

The novel is set mainly in Afghanistan, beginning in the 1960s and continuing through decades of political upheaval, including the Soviet invasion, civil war, and Taliban rule.

• Mariam is born to a poor mother and an influential but distant father. At a young age, she is forced into marriage with Rasheed, a much older man.
• Laila, who grows up in Kabul, loses her family because of the war and eventually becomes Rasheed's second wife.
• Although Mariam and Laila initially struggle to accept each other, they gradually develop a deep friendship and mother-daughter-like bond.
• Together, they endure domestic abuse, poverty, war, and restrictions imposed by the Taliban.
• Their relationship becomes the emotional heart of the novel, showing how love, sacrifice, courage, and solidarity can survive even under terrible circumstances.
