Insomnia by Stephen King is a haunting supernatural thriller about an elderly man's battle with sleeplessness that gradually reveals a terrifying connection to forces beyond the ordinary world.
Ralph Roberts is an elderly widower living in the troubled town of Derry, Maine. Since the death of his wife, Ralph has found himself suffering from increasingly severe insomnia. At first, the lack of sleep seems like an unfortunate consequence of grief and aging.
But as Ralph loses more and more sleep, he begins to experience strange changes in his perception.
He starts seeing mysterious auras surrounding people, strange colors and patterns that seem to reveal something about their lives. Soon, Ralph realizes that his insomnia has given him access to a hidden reality that exists alongside the ordinary world.
As his sleeplessness intensifies, Ralph encounters mysterious figures who appear to have their own roles in a vast supernatural struggle. What initially seems like hallucination becomes increasingly difficult to dismiss.
At the same time, Derry is being consumed by a bitter and increasingly dangerous conflict surrounding an abortion clinic. Ralph becomes concerned for Helen Deepneau, a woman whose life is threatened by escalating violence.
Ralph's strange new abilities convince him that something far larger is taking place. He begins to understand that the events in Derry are connected to powerful forces that operate beyond human understanding—and that his own actions may have consequences far beyond the town.
As Ralph ventures deeper into this hidden world, he discovers that time, destiny and free will are intertwined in ways he could never have imagined.
But there is a price for seeing what others cannot.
Ralph must decide whether to accept the role that has been thrust upon him and risk everything to protect the people he cares about, even if doing so means confronting forces far more powerful than himself.
Dark, atmospheric and deeply imaginative, Insomnia combines psychological horror, supernatural fantasy and cosmic mythology. Set in the familiar streets of Derry and connected to the wider mythology of Stephen King's universe, the novel explores aging, grief, friendship, destiny, sacrifice and the hidden forces that shape human lives.
