After successfully helping free a man who was wrongly convicted of murder, Mickey Haller begins receiving letters from prisoners who insist they are innocent.
Mickey knows that most of these claims won't hold up. So he turns to his half-brother, Harry Bosch, a retired LAPD detective, and asks him to sort through the cases and identify the ones that deserve a closer look.
Bosch eventually finds a case that stands out.
Lucinda Sanz has been imprisoned for killing her ex-husband, a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy. She pleaded no contest to manslaughter rather than risk a life sentence at trial, but she continues to insist that she did not commit the murder.
When Bosch examines the original investigation, he finds troubling inconsistencies. The sheriff's department also appears determined to keep the case closed, particularly because the victim was one of its own.
Mickey takes on Sanz's case and begins fighting to overturn her conviction.
But reopening a case involving a murdered police officer is dangerous.
As Mickey and Bosch dig deeper, they uncover evidence suggesting that the original investigation may have been seriously flawed. Witness statements, investigative decisions, and the circumstances surrounding the deputy's death all raise new questions.
And someone clearly doesn't want those questions answered.
