Product Overview & Details

The Hindus: An Alternative History by Wendy Doniger is a comprehensive exploration of Hindu traditions, mythology, philosophy, literature, and social history spanning more than six thousand years. Rather than presenting Hinduism as a single, fixed tradition, Doniger examines its diversity, contradictions, regional variations, and the many voices that have shaped its development over time.

The book explores Hindu history through a wide range of sources, including ancient Sanskrit texts, myths, epics, religious writings, folklore, and cultural traditions. It discusses major concepts such as dharma, karma, reincarnation, devotion, ritual, mythology, and social structures, while examining how these ideas have changed across different historical periods and communities.

Doniger presents Hinduism as a dynamic and evolving tradition, highlighting perspectives often overlooked in traditional historical narratives, including the experiences of women, marginalized communities, and non-elite groups. The book connects mythology with historical development and explores the relationship between religious imagination, social practices, and cultural identity.

Written by one of the world's leading scholars of Hindu studies, The Hindus offers an extensive and interpretive account of one of the world's oldest religious traditions, making it a significant work for readers interested in religion, Indian culture, and intellectual history.
