BSOG-171: Indian Society – Images and RealitiesBSOG-171, “Indian Society: Images and Realities,” is an IGNOU sociology course that examines the major features, institutions, problems, and changing realities of Indian society. What the course is aboutThe course helps you understand Indian society not just through textbook descriptions, but by comparing popular images of India with actual social realities. It looks at how caste, class, tribe, religion, family, gender, rural and urban life, and social change shape people's everyday experiences.Major themesUnity and diversity: India’s linguistic, religious, cultural and regional diversity, along with the forces that create social unity.Caste and social stratification: The caste system, hierarchy, inequality, discrimination, and changes brought by education, urbanisation, democracy and affirmative action.Tribes and marginalised communities: Tribal societies, their relationship with the state and wider society, and issues of development and displacement.Family and marriage: Changing patterns of family, marriage, kinship and household relationships.Religion and society: Religious diversity, communalism, secularism and the role of religion in social life.Gender relations: The social position of women, patriarchy, gender inequality and women's changing roles.Rural and urban society: Village life, agrarian relations, urbanisation, migration and the growth of cities.Social movements and change: Movements related to caste, gender, environment, tribal rights and other forms of social justice.Globalisation and contemporary India: How economic, technological and cultural changes are transforming Indian society.Meaning of “Images and Realities”The title is important. “Images” refers to commonly held ideas about Indian society—for example, the image of India as a traditional, harmonious and culturally united society. “Realities” asks us to look deeper and recognise inequalities, conflicts, discrimination and social change that may not be visible in those simplified images. So, the course encourages a sociological perspective: instead of accepting assumptions about Indian society, we examine them critically using concepts, evidence and different social experiences.

BSOG-176: Economy and Society — Hindi MediumEconomy and Society

MOBY DICK – A Tale of Obsession and the Sea | Author: Herman MelvilleMoby-Dick; or, The Whale by Herman Melville is one of the most celebrated classics of American literature, combining adventure, maritime drama, philosophy, symbolism, and an unforgettable tale of obsession. First published in 1851, the novel follows Ishmael, a young sailor who joins the whaling ship Pequod and embarks on a voyage that will become far more dangerous and profound than he could have imagined. At the centre of the story is Captain Ahab, the commanding figure of the Pequod, whose relentless pursuit of the great white whale Moby Dick drives the narrative. For Ahab, the whale is not simply an animal but an object of fixation, and his determination to find it gradually shapes the fate of everyone aboard the ship.Through Ishmael’s eyes, readers encounter the harsh beauty and immense power of the sea, the demanding life of nineteenth-century whalers, and the diverse crew brought together aboard the Pequod. Alongside its central adventure, Moby-Dick explores the many dimensions of life at sea, from navigation and whaling practices to the relationships and cultures of the sailors.More than a story of one ship’s pursuit of a legendary whale, Moby-Dick is a profound exploration of obsession and its consequences. Ahab’s quest raises enduring questions about determination, revenge, destiny, and the limits of human control over nature.Ideal for readers of classic literature, adventure fiction, maritime stories, and philosophical novels, Moby-Dick remains a remarkable literary journey into the vastness of the ocean and the depths of the human mind.
