Product Overview & Details
Administrative Thinkers are scholars and practitioners who developed important theories and ideas about public administration, organisation, management and human behaviour. Their ideas have contributed significantly to the development of administrative theory and practice.
Major Administrative Thinkers
1. F.W. Taylor – Scientific Management
Frederick Winslow Taylor is known as the father of Scientific Management. He emphasised scientific methods for improving efficiency and productivity. He advocated standardisation, division of work, proper selection and training of employees, and performance-based incentives.
2. Henri Fayol – Principles of Administration
Fayol developed general principles of management. His important principles include division of work, authority and responsibility, discipline, unity of command, unity of direction, centralisation and esprit de corps. He identified major functions of management such as planning, organising, commanding, coordinating and controlling.
3. Max Weber – Bureaucratic Theory
Max Weber explained the concept of bureaucracy as a rational form of organisation. It is based on hierarchy, division of labour, clearly defined rules, specialisation and impersonal relationships. According to Weber, bureaucracy promotes systematic and predictable administration.
4. Elton Mayo – Human Relations Approach
Elton Mayo highlighted the importance of human and social factors in organisations. His Hawthorne studies showed that employee morale, group relationships and communication can influence organisational performance.
5. Herbert Simon – Decision-Making Approach
Herbert Simon viewed administration mainly as a process of decision-making. He introduced the concept of bounded rationality, arguing that administrators have limited information, time and cognitive capacity and therefore often choose satisfactory rather than perfectly optimal solutions.
Conclusion
Administrative thinkers have provided different perspectives on efficiency, organisational structure, human behaviour and decision-making. Their ideas form an important foundation for understanding modern public administration.
