Product Overview & Details
History of India – IV: Description
History of India – IV generally deals with the history of India from the early eighteenth century to the establishment of the Republic in 1950–51. It is a period of enormous political, economic, social and cultural transformation. The course begins with the decline of Mughal power after 1707, examines the rise of regional states and British colonialism, and concludes with Indian independence, Partition, the Constitution, and the emergence of India as a democratic republic.
1. Decline of the Mughal Empire
The death of Aurangzeb in 1707 marks an important starting point. The Mughal Empire gradually weakened because of weak successors, succession conflicts, financial problems, administrative difficulties and the growing power of regional rulers.
The invasions of Nadir Shah (1739) and Ahmad Shah Abdali further exposed the weakness of the Mughal state.
As Mughal authority declined, regional powers such as the Marathas, Bengal, Awadh, Hyderabad, Mysore and the Sikh Empire became increasingly powerful.
