History of India from c. 1206 to 1708
The period c. 1206–1708 is an important phase of Medieval Indian History. It begins with the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate in 1206 and extends to the period immediately after the death of Aurangzeb in 1707. It witnessed the rise and fall of several dynasties, the expansion of the Mughal Empire, the growth of regional kingdoms, and major developments in Indian society, economy, religion, literature, and architecture.
1. Establishment of the Delhi Sultanate
The Delhi Sultanate was established in 1206 after the death of Muhammad Ghori. His former slave and general, Qutb-ud-din Aibak, became the first Sultan of Delhi.
The Sultanate consisted of five major dynasties:
- Mamluk or Slave Dynasty (1206–1290)
- Khalji Dynasty (1290–1320)
- Tughlaq Dynasty (1320–1414)
- Sayyid Dynasty (1414–1451)
- Lodi Dynasty (1451–1526)
