History of India (c. 1550–1605) — BHIC-109

The period from about 1550 to 1605 is an important phase in the history of medieval India. It covers mainly the reign of Akbar (1556–1605), the Mughal emperor who played a major role in consolidating and expanding the Mughal Empire. The course BHIC-109, History of India (c. 1550–1605) examines the political, administrative, economic, social, and cultural developments of this period.

The Mughal Empire faced considerable political challenges in the early years of Akbar's reign. After the Second Battle of Panipat in 1556, Akbar gradually strengthened Mughal authority. He expanded the empire into different regions, including Rajputana, Gujarat, Bengal, Bihar, Malwa, and parts of the Deccan. His relations with the Rajputs and his policy of political cooperation were significant features of Mughal expansion.

The course also discusses the Mughal administrative system. Akbar developed institutions such as the mansabdari system and improved revenue administration. The zabt system associated with Raja Todar Mal helped organize land revenue assessment and collection. These measures contributed to the financial and administrative stability of the empire.

Another important aspect was Akbar's policy towards different religious and social groups. His ideas of sulh-i kul (universal peace) and his efforts to encourage dialogue among different religious traditions reflected his attempt to create political stability in a diverse empire.

The period also witnessed considerable growth in art, architecture, literature, painting, and cultural exchange. Buildings at Fatehpur Sikri and the development of Mughal miniature painting are notable examples.
