Product Overview & Details
Classical Political Philosophy
Classical Political Philosophy is the study of fundamental questions about the state, government, justice, law, political authority, citizenship, liberty, and the ideal society in the ancient world. It mainly developed in ancient Greece and Rome and laid the foundation for much of later Western political thought.
1. Main Questions of Classical Political Philosophy
Classical political philosophers asked questions such as:
- What is justice?
- What is the best form of government?
- What makes political authority legitimate?
- What are the duties of a citizen?
- What is the relationship between the individual and the state?
- Should rulers be guided by law and morality?
- What kind of society allows human beings to live a good and virtuous life?
2. Socrates
Socrates emphasized moral knowledge, virtue and justice. He believed that political life should be guided by ethical principles rather than personal interests.
His method of questioning encouraged people to examine their beliefs and search for truth.
3. Plato
Plato developed one of the most influential theories of political philosophy in The Republic.
